This region is in western Virginia and spans across metropolitan areas (MSAs) from Roanoke-Alleghany Region to the New River Valley.

The region’s industries provided approximately 6.4% 3 of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2017. Historically, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and utilities industries have played a significant role in the region’s economic activity. Recently the region has experienced growth in the health and education sector and experienced a 185% growth in annual postsecondary graduates.

The Roanoke and New River region consists of:

Cities – Covington, Radford, Roanoke, and Salem
Counties – Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
